Product details
We did not try to make our own pen. Pilot has been building the Metropolitan in Japan since 2012 and it still opens every list of good starter fountain pens, because a brass barrel and a properly tuned steel nib at this price has no real competition.
Plain black: matte lacquer over brass, a glossy black centre section between two chrome rings, and nothing else. 138 mm capped, 26 g in the hand, which is enough weight for the pen to write itself without being tiring.
The nib is stainless steel, cut fine or medium. Japanese nibs run about one size finer than European ones, so the fine is genuinely fine. It ships with a CON-40 converter for bottled ink and one black cartridge, so it writes out of the box either way.
We laser engrave the wordmark into the barrel. The mark is cut through the lacquer into the brass underneath, so it cannot rub off and it stays legible for the life of the pen.
